Computer Fairs started out back in the days of the
286-PC, Sega Megadrive and Amiga, but today you're more likely to see
Ultra Mobile PCs, state of art gaming machines, digital cameras, MP3 players
and SatNav devices on sale. It's a very competitive environment and prices are
always cut to the bone. The traders can afford to do this because at a
show they are not held back by high overheads - advertising, shop rents,
shipping etc. To get the most out of a fair, the best tactic is to take a good look around first to check out the prices, always bearing in mind that you will need to be quick if there's a good bargain. Haggling is encouraged, but you will get better results near the end of the show when the trader has run out of coffee, got sore feet, and just wants to go home, so the more items sold means the less to carry! It helps if you know the current market price of what you're after, which is where a copy of a recent computer magazine comes in handy. Although the prices within the show will be keen, it certainly doesn't hurt just to check! "I'd recommend someone to come back and get to know the fair, compare prices between traders and other shops anywhere. We're back in each venue each month," says Paul Driver the organiser of London based British Computer Fairs. Above all, computer fairs are fun and friendly, and you're sure to save some money! |
